An app for choosing a research lab

LabLog helps students choose a research lab using the voices of current and former lab members. Student voices can be read only by students who sign up with a university email address.

Reviews include ratings in 6 categories such as supervision and workload, plus core hours and main career paths. Basic lab information, such as university, faculty, faculty members, research field and official website links, is organized from public sources such as university directories and lab websites.

Who can sign up

You need a student email address issued by one of the 14 universities listed below. Anyone else, including students at other universities, cannot sign up. International students at these universities can sign up.

How to use LabLog

  1. Sign up with your university email

    Enter the email address issued by your university, then enter the verification code we send you.

  2. Find labs

    Search by university, faculty, department, research field or professor name.

  3. Read student voices and ask questions

    Read voices from the lab's students. In labs that have voices, you can also ask those students a question anonymously.

Languages and translation

The app's screens, error messages and emails are available in English and Simplified Chinese. LabLog first uses your browser or phone language, and you can change it from the menu.

Lab introductions and student voices are translated from Japanese by AI. Translated pages are labeled, and you can view the Japanese original. Translations may contain mistakes, so please check the original for important details.

The Terms of Service and Privacy Policy are in Japanese, and the Japanese text prevails.

Frequently asked questions

Is LabLog free?
Yes. Downloading the app, signing up and reading reviews are free.
Can I use LabLog if I do not study at one of the 14 universities?
You cannot sign up without a student email address from one of the 14 universities.
Who writes the reviews?
Current lab members and graduates write about their own experience. Some reviews are written up by our team after interviewing students. We may give interviewees a gift worth 1,000 yen, regardless of what they say. Reviews do not show the writer's name, year or affiliation. Details about interviews and personal data are on the page for interview participants, linked in the footer.
Can professors read the reviews?
Reviews can be read only by students who signed up with a university email address.
Do you check reviews before publishing them?
Yes. Our team checks each review, hides details that could identify someone, and adjusts wording. We do not publish content that violates the Terms of Service. We may use AI services for checks, but a staff member makes the final decision.
How do I correct or remove a listing?
Please use the contact form. We will check the details and correct or remove the content. If you wrote a voice and ask us to withdraw it, we will do so whatever the reason.
Which devices can I use?
There are apps for iPhone (iOS 15.0 or later) and Android (7.0 or later). You can also use a browser at app.lab-choice.com.
